About the city

Velingrad is located in Southern Bulgaria in the Chepino valley in the Western Rhodopes. Characteristic of its location is the mountain climate, which makes it ideal for holidays – in summer it is cool and in winter it’s mild and short. People in the city say that this is one of the most cloudless cities in Bulgaria and due to its location it rarely rains.

Located at 777 meters above sea level, the city is known for its many water resources – there you will find many karst and mineral springs that supply the city with drinkable water and support its development as a spa capital of the Balkan Peninsula.

Located in the Rhodopes, the city offers walks in the amazing nature, and its proximity to eco-trails makes it an even more desirable destination for tourists who want to relax from the hustle and bustle of the city and indulge in a healing vacation.

Landmarks

The city is famous for its many attractions. The most famous of them are Kleptuza and the Tsepina fortress. Kleptuza is a karst spring turned into a landmark. You can't help but feel the romantic atmosphere while walking through the park, made with so much love, and in the summer, if you are lucky, you will be able to go for a boat ride, enjoying the magnificent views.

Velingrad is also known for the fact that on its territory intersect 24 meridians and 42 parallels – a rare intersection point, whose combination of numbers gives a mysterious charm to the surrounding area. There is also a Thracian cult settlement in the area, and only 18 km from the town you will be able to see the old Bulgarian fortress Tsepina, which was the capital of the possessions of Despot Slav. Lovers of historical facts will be able to visit the historical museum, which is home to more than 19 thousand cultural and historical finds.

If you visit Velingrad in July, then you will be able to attend the annual Velingrad Festival of Culture, which features concerts, literary readings and many other activities that tell not only about the local culture, but also have guests performers from different places to make the program even more interesting for both locals and guests of the city.

About the mineral water

The city is famous for its mineral springs. There are 4 known mineral water deposits - Ladjene 1 and 2, Chepino and Kamenica. Water is used for both healing and drinking. Thanks to this, the city is also known as the spa capital of the Balkans.

How to get to Velingrad

Velingrad has a bus station and a train station. By bus you can reach the city from any other big city. Velingrad is located 134 km from Sofia, 94 km from Plovdiv and only 45 km from Pazardzhik.

You can reach the city through the only narrow-gauge railway in the country, running on the route September – Dobrinishte. Traveling by it is a unique experience, so it is a great start to your vacation.
